Plextor Set to Unveil the Next Generation PCIe NVMe SSD

Solid State Drive (SSD) is now becoming more common and will rapidly replace the traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) in the near future. However, the supposed high performing SSD are hitting a significant performance wall due to the fact that majority of the SSD available on the market still uses SATA interface and AHCI controller interface standard that was created back then to handles the much slower traditional HDD.

Plextor PCIe NVMe SSD

While there are quite a number of high-end SSD that are designed to take the advantage of high speed the PCI Express (PCIe) interface, the use of ACHI controller interface specification on the controller design is still not suffice to take full advantage of the PCI Express interface. Manufacturers are now looking into NVMe controller interface specification to fully eliminate the existing bottleneck that limit the true potential of SSD.

What is NVMe?
NVM Express (NVMe) or Non-Volatile Memory Express, is a standardized high performance host controller interface for PCIe SSDs that will ultimately deliver plug-and-play functionality for PCIe-connected SSDs on all platform.

The first NVMe prototype was seen back in 2007, where a NVMHCI working group led by Intel was formed that year to perform for research and development on the Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface which aims to remove the bandwidth limitations of SATA and shedding the AHCI communication protocol. As the group finalized PCI Express as the standardized connection interface, version 1.0 of the specification was released on 2011, followed by version 1.2 update on 2014.

Advantages of NVMe: Low Latency
When an AHCI controller executes a command, an un-cacheable register read consumes 2000 CPU cycles and there are 4 un-cacheable register reads per command. This translates into 8000 CPU cycles, or roughly 2.5 µs of latency per command. NVMe on the other hand, will not experience such delay as it will directly communicate with the CPU, thus, skipping all the unnecessary communication that causes delay.

Advantages of NVMe: High Performance
Low latency isn't the only advantage you'll get from NVMe, as it also offers a much higher IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second). NVMe is capable of supporting up to 64K I/O queues, with each I/O queue supporting up to 64K commands, taking the full advantage of NAND Flash's parallel read and write. AHCI on the other hand, support only single I/O queue with up to 32 commands per queue, which leads to a much slower performance compared to NVMe.

NVMe - The Mainstream Storage Interface Standard
With Intel 9 / 100 series chipset now supports NVMe and Operating System such as Windows 8.1 Windows Server 2012 R2 or later that comes with built-in NVMe driver, SSD manufacturers are seen releasing consumer grade NVMe SSD products starting from last year as well as during Computex Taipei back in the month of June. In August, Plextor set to announce the availability of its consumer grade M8Pe series NVMe SSD.
NVMe are bound to become the future standard of mainstream storage interface, as well as the advancement of NAND flash technology and it's slowly manifests in various form of interfaces i.e M.2, PCIe, U.2, etc. As Market research institution predicted the possibilities of NVMe to replace AHCI as the new standard for mainstream SSD in 2017, and this marks the coming era of NVMe SSD.

Plextor M7V Series Leads the TLC SSD Market

Plextor announced the longest lifetime M7V series solid-state drive. The M7V series is Plextor's first TLC SSD product, combining top-class components and exclusive firmware, allowing the M7V to surpass the current TLC SSD's key technical limits, reaching a P/E cycle of up to 2,000 times. The best P/E lifetime, speed, capacity and stability will stand to satisfy the consumer's demands for the best cost performance, providing users with a new generation TLC SSD product to choose from.
Plextor M7V Series

The key to dramatically increasing Plextor M7V's lifetime as a TLC SDD is through coupling the highest grade components from the industry with advanced firmware. The M7V series applies the new generation Marvell control chip, designed exclusively for TLC products, along with Toshiba's latest 15 nm process TLC NAND flash memory. It also applies multiple technologies developed exclusively by Plextor, including the tailor-made write acceleration technology PlexNitro, the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) troubleshooting technology with three times the average rate, and PlexTurbo, a software that applies system memory to decrease the amount of reading and writing.

The result brings about the astonishing 2,000 times P/E cycle lifetime of the M7V series, 2 to 4 times as durable as a normal TLC SSD, providing the largest TBW (Total Bytes Written) for its users. Using the 512GB capacity version as an example, it has a TBW of 320TB. The M7V has set up a new milestone for TLC SSD products, marking a new page with its outstanding lifetime, P/E durability and stability, bringing forth an unforeseen top notch quality application.

Plextor's superb firmware and software technology has always been the key to surpassing and receiving recognition above products of the same level. Looking at the firmware technology applied, the M7V series uses the exclusive PlexNitro technology that differs from other TLC SSD products, allowing the M7V to not require reserving hard drive space, increasing its writing capability while keeping the most complete SSD storage capacity for its users, giving the user's the best return for their choice. Using the lowest capacity products of 128GB for example, when other TLC brands can only provide a true 120GB of storage space, Plextor can support a complete 128GB TLC SSD capacity.

The widely recognized PlexTurbo software can apply the system's DRAM to accelerate the SSD's read and write efficiency, allowing the M7V that has a designed sequential read/write speed of 560/530 MB/s, random read/write speed of 98K/84K IOPS to increase its speed by 6 to 10 times. PlexTurbo can also reduce the frequency of data writing, greatly increasing the lifetime of the SSD, bringing advanced efficiency for the TLC SSD.

Apart from PlexTurbo, the M7V series can also use two other additional softwares, the PlexCompressor & PlexVault - PlexCompressor can compress files that have a low usage rate while not affecting the SSD's efficiency, providing more available space for its user; PlexVault can set up an exclusive space for sensitive information by tapping on a few hot keys, providing utmost privacy and security to the data conveniently.

Operation Director of Plextor, Eva Lee, expressed, "Facing the market trend of TLC SSDs with high cost performance ratios, consumers have higher expectations for the product's lifetime, efficiency and reliability. In response to this, Plextor has applied various advanced technologies and components, building the much more reliable M7V product series, providing the best data stability and security with various fast access-enhancing and troubleshooting technology while greatly increasing the SSD's lifetime, guaranteeing users the highest cost-effectiveness and protection for their SSD. As we deliver the M7V series, we will also make the PlexTurbo, PlexCompressor and PlexVault available to all M6 series users, and we promise to continue to provide premium services for the users of Plextor."

The Plextor M7V Series Solid-State Drives will be delivered in April of 2016, providing two different standard specs - the 2.5 inch (PX-M7VC) and the M.2 2280 (PX-M7VG), with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities to choose from, satisfying SSD system requirements from desktop computers to ultra-slim notebooks.

Plextor’s Exclusive Software Free Downloads for All M6 Series SSD Users

Solid State Drive (SSD) prices have been coming down with new advances in NAND Flash and controller IC technologies. But if all you care about when shopping for SSDs are price and storage size, then you are truly behind the times. Plextor SSD products offer a whole lot more functionalities in addition to price and storage size. Our three major value-adding software solutions (PlexTurbo, PlexCompressor and PlexVault) maximize file-transfer speed and disk space usage, offering consumers the highest values for their prices on the current market.

Plextor's three software solutions have been well received since their releases last July. Originally they were only available to users of specific Plextor SSD models, but due to overwhelming response, Plextor has announced that all three software tools - PlexTurbo, PlexCompressor and PlexVault - will be offered to all users of M6 series SSDs.
Plextor M6 Series SSD

The Entire Plextor M6 Series SSD Product Line

If you still don't know what the three Plextor software solutions are or do, here is a quick overview:

PlexTurbo: Speed Accelerator And Lifespan Expander
PlexTurbo enhances two SSD functions: accelerated efficiency and extended service life. Using system memory, Plextor SSD’s transfer speed is increased while the read/write frequency on the disk is reduced to extend its service life. The SSD failure rate is thus reduced.
Plextor M6 Series SSD

According to Plextor factory tests, activating PlexTurbo while assigning 16GB DRAM space as accelerated cache will increase the sequential read/write speed by 16 times and the random read/write speed by 3 times.

PlexCompressor: Increased Volume, Intelligent Compression
Typically, the installation of operating systems or programs will take up a large portion of disk space. For example, many files that came pre-installed with the Windows operating system are never used, but most users will keep these files either to ensure system stability, or simply because they do not know which files can be deleted. PlexCompressor will automatically detect files on the SDD with low usage rates and compress them in the background to free up disk space without affecting system performance. With more available free space, users can enjoy Plextor SSDs at maximum capacity.

PlexVault: Encrypted Volume to Protect Your Privacy
Is there a lack of privacy on your shared family computer? Do you have personal files that you do not want your boyfriend/girlfriend to see? When sharing a computer with two or more people, trying to keep saved photos or personal files away from the other users sharing your computer can be a hassle. PlexVault can save you from such awkwardness by allowing Plextor users to keep their privacy.
Plextor M6 Series SSD

With PlexVault, you can assign a volume on the SSD for personal files that can only be accessed by dual-key combinations. Others must first enter the correct set of key combinations before reaching the second password security level, thus greatly increasing file security with the dual-safety design.

This private space is in raw data format, undetectable by the Windows operating system, even the system device manager, file manager or disk manager cannot detect or display it. If you wish to save confidential information, personal photos and/or other media, or simply just want to avoid any intrusion of your personal space, PlexVault is the solution for you! It secures your file with total isolation from other shared users.

For computers with multiple users, each person will only have access to his or her own personal space. For example, the D drives of two persons in the figure above have different names, which means they each only see their own personal file space and cannot see the space containing the other person's files.

Plextor Sets to Unveil its TLC Solid State Drives

Plextor TLC SSD

As solid state drives (SSD) prices continue to drop, TLC SSD, with its advantage of low cost and high capacity, is replacing MLC SSD and becoming the mainstream in the consumer market. TLC NAND flash chips have actually being around for a long time, but they are more commonly used in products such as memory cards and USB drives. As controller IC technology matures and as firmware technology evolves, SSD are also beginning to utilize TLC NAND flash chips.

What is TLC?
TLC is probably not unfamiliar to iPhone fans; when iPhone 6 began using TLC chips, it caused some waves amongst the market. With the maturation of firmware, and as the later iPhone 6s being equipped with a larger buffer memory, consumers' concern with regarding iPhone using TLC chips have gradually dissipated.

There are 4 types of NAND flash technology architectures, SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC; they differ on how many bits are stored in each cell.

Plextor TLC SSD

Plextor TLC SSD

Due to the fact that solid state drives using SLC NAND flash chips are limited to storing one bit of data in each cell, there is no advantage to the storage capacity per cell; as a result, cost has remained high, the primary application of SLC SSD are limited to military and industrial uses. Due to the high cost of SLC, even enterprise level SSD used by servers have begun to use MLC solid state drives.

As for MLC solid state drives, it has become the mainstream for consumer grade solid state drives during the past seven to eight years (2008 - 2015). But with the evolution of NAND flash technology, TLC can allow each cell to store up to 3 bits/cell, meaning that the storage density of TLC NAND flash is higher while the unit cost is lower. When compared to MLC SSD, TLC SSD can achieve the same capacity by using less NAND flash chips, resulting in production cost advantages.  TLC is also referred to as 3-bit MLC.

TLC Durability
Before discussing the durability of TLC, we should first discuss why SSD has service life issues. The most important storage component within the SSD is the NAND flash, it is also the NAND flash that determines the service life of an SSD. Based on NAND flash's physical structure, data exists in the form of electric charges stored within layers of insulation. Charging (writing data) or discharging (erasing data) must pass through the insulation layer, and the passing electric charge would breakdown the insulation layer slightly. After certain numbers of charging/discharging cycles the memory component will wear out. That is why the concept of P/E cycle exists, calculating service life based on the number of times data can be written and erased.

For most who question the durability of TLC, their concerns are generally about the service life (P/E cycles) of TLC, which is shorter as compared to MLC. The reason why TLC has a shorter service life as compared to MLC is because TLC requiring higher voltages during the writing and erasing processes. TLC can store up to 3 bits per cell, which requires 8 voltage states; compared to MLC, which stores 2 bits per cell, and thus only requires 4 voltage states. The higher voltages cause the insulation layer to breakdown faster.

Proper Usage of Solid State Drives
From the above, we can see that SLC, MLC and TLC all have an expected service life. As long as NAND flash is experiencing continuous writing and erasing, sooner or later the threshold will be reached and it will be worn out; just like a piece of paper which can only be erased by an eraser for a certain number of times.

Some people may ask why not just use traditional hard disk drives (HDDs)? While the traditional hard drives do not have service life limitations with respect to P/E cycles; their mechanical structures do wear out eventually. Not only are the read/write speeds of HDDs less than 1/5 of SSDs, they are also bulky, heavy, noisy, and can easily be damaged when dropped. In comparison, SSDs are faster, lighter, quieter, and shock-resistant, and thereby becoming the mainstream on the storage market today. Similar to the cellular phone market, while traditional cell phones are very durable, with the advancement in technology and the consumers’ need for speed, smartphones have become the norm.

No matter what storage media you are using, SSDs or HDDs, it is always a good idea to back up your data on a regular basis. Also, if you wish to extend the service life of SSDs, in addition to avoid using the drive that requires heavy reading/writing tasks (such as constantly running BT downloads or defragmenting it), you can also install software which reduces the number of writes (like PlexTurbo by Plextor) to extend the drive's service life limit.

Advancement in TLC Technology Increases Durability
TLC is replacing MLC as the mainstream in the consumer SSD market. It is understandable that consumers are worried about TLC's service life. When MLC SSDs first become popular consumers were also concerned about MLC's reduced service life as compared to SLC. However, with the increasing number of users and as time gone by, that concern has long since dissipated. Last year, a handful of manufacturers tested the water and launched TLC SSDs, but they were not favored by the consumers. However, with the advancement of TLC NAND flash technology, TLC SSDs is definitely on track to become the mainstream this year.

In the past year, Plextor has focused its attention on increasing the service life of TLC SSDs. By using high quality TLC NAND flash chips, selecting the best-suited controller (the brain of solid state drives) and combining proprietary firmware, Plextor is fully committed to increasing the durability of TLC SSDs with their exclusive technologies.

Plextor TLC SSD

Now rumor has it that Plextor plans to launch its first TLC SSD with 2,000 P/E cycles, far above the market average (typical TLC P/E cycle is around 500 to 1,000), thus ensuring a certain level of product life expectancy.

Plextor TLC SSD

In addition, Plextor's TLC SSDs can be used with PlexTurbo software. Installing PlexTurbo would not only increase the read/write speeds of SSDs, more importantly, it decreases the number of write access, which greatly benefits TLC SSDs since writing fewer times means consuming less P/E cycles, thus extending the service life of SSDs.

Plextor: Talks about the History of Hard Drives

The history of hard drives dates back almost 60 years. Plextor, the global leading brand of high-performance digital storage devices, answered the customers' needs for the replacement of aging hard-drive technology with higher speed storage with the debut of its first SSD in 2009. In response to demand for our acclaimed SSDs, PLEXTOR is undertaking an aggressive expansion program and operating in more markets worldwide. Here Plextor talks about the history of hard drives and unveil some interesting facts and figures about the evolution.
Plextor M6V

1956 - The first hard drive to use rotating magnetic plates for data storage
CAPACITY: 5MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: 24-inch magnetic plates (1 200 RPM)
ACCESS TIME: 600 ms

At that time, one hard drive with its electromechanical systems weighed near one tonne and consisted of 50 magnetic plates. They were handled by a single head. It was the main reason of extra-long data access time. IBM 350 unit could have been rented from the manufacturer with average monthly equivalent of approximately 28 thousand dollars. A hypothetical scenario of Windows 10 (64-bit) system installation on a drive would require connection of 4096 units to obtain the necessary 20 GB disk space

1970 - The first disk drive to use error correction system
CAPACITY: 100 MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: 14-inch magnetic plates (3 600 RPM)
ACCESS TIME: 30-55 ms

The storage medium case of IBM 3330 drive was replaceable disk modules consisting of 11 magnetic plates. It was possible to move and store them. The data transfer rate was approximately 806 KB/s. The final IBM 3330 Model 11 of 1974 cost approximately 418 thousand dollars.

1976 - The first drive with SSD characteristic - no moving, mechanical components
CAPACITY: From 256 KB to 2 MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: ferrite memory
ACCESS TIME: 0,75-2 ms

In the 1970s, even before first NAND flash memory modules were developed, magnetic ferrite memory was considered an attractive alternative for media using magnetic plates. Its main advantage was fast data access time. Bulk Core unit could hold up to eight memory modules, each of them having a 256 KB capacity. The basic version with a single module cost some $40 thousand. 1 TB of data would cost about $1.6 billion.

1980 -The first HDD that was able to fit in the PC enclosure
CAPACITY: 5 MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: magnetic plates (3 600 RPM)
ACCESS TIME: 85 ms

The disc format comes from the 5.25" floppy disks developed at the end of the 1970s. The drive weighed 3.2 kg and was considered as the peak of miniaturization that day. It consisted of two magnetic plates supported by four heads. It was connected to the computer through the controller. The data transfer rate was approximately 655 KB/s.

1988 - The first hard drive to use the 2.5" format
CAPACITY: 20MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: magnetic plates
ACCESS TIME: 23 ms

PrairieTek company, that created the first hard disk suitable for use in a laptop, has not succeeded on the market and gone bankrupt in 1990. The real boom for 2.5" hard drives occurred only during the first decade of the 21st century, when laptops became more and more popular. Today the 2.5" format is a standard on the SSD drives market.

1995 - Usage of NAND Flash memory in the role of a reliable storage medium
CAPACITY: from 16 MB to 896 MB
STORAGE MEDIUM: NAND Flash memory
ACCESS TIME: below 0.1 ms

The first FFD drives (Fast Flash Drive) used the SCSI interface and had a desktop computer format of 3.5". Because of very high prices, the FFD drives never gained popularity among ordinary PC users. They were used by the defense industry and became popular as storage medium in aircraft flight data recorders.

2007 - The first affordable and highly available hard drive with a capacity of 1 TB
CAPACITY: 1 TB
STORAGE MEDIUM: magnetic plates (7 200 RPM)
ACCESS TIME: 8,5 ms

The Hitachi company was first to produce a 1 TB HDD, but was caught up by its competitors in the same year. The first drive with a capacity of 1 TB had 5 plates supported by 10 heads. In 2007 one HDD weighing 700 g had a capacity, for which in 1956 approximately 200 thousand IBM 350 drives would be required. They would weigh as much as two nuclear Nimitz class aircraft carriers.

2015 - Solid State Drives are highly available for ordinary users nowadays
CAPACITY: from 128 GB to 1 TB
STORAGE MEDIUM: different types of NAND Flash memory (MLC, SLC.TLC)
ACCESS TIME: below 0.1 ms
Plextor M6V

Even affordable SSD drives are several times faster than HDDs. On the market there are solid state drives using various interfaces (SATA 6 Gb/s, PCIe, M2). The most common is however the universal 2.5" SATA, such as Plextor M6V. The boot-up of Windows 10 operating system with a SSD typically takes less than ten seconds. Games and programs installed on the SSD run faster than those installed on the HDD. Modern SSD drives are just as reliable and have a similar life cycle as HDD drives. Through the use of such technologies as PlexTurbo 3.0 in Plextor drives, you can extend their life cycle, reducing wear of flash memory cells.

PLEXTOR's award-winning products and reputation for excellence are, and will continue to be, reflections of our four fundamental values.
