Transcend's advice for selecting the right dashcam for your needs

The dashcam, or dashboard camera, has become an essential vehicle accessory primarily because of solid evidence that it aids with self-protection. Transcend Information Inc., a leading manufacturer of storage and multimedia products, has come up with DrivePro dash cam products which live up to the brand’s stellar reputation for quality, reliability and affordability. As the industry expands, consumers enjoy more options with dashcams coming in different shapes and with diverse features. Here is Transcend’s advice to shed some light on how to select the right dashcam for your needs.

1) Image Sensor

Image sensor captures the light coming in through the lens to form a digital image. The larger the image sensor, the greater number of pixels it contains, meaning the more light it receives to produce clearer images with less noise.

2) Field of view

The most common field of view found among dashcams is 120 degrees to 140 degrees. While a larger field of view means more imagery is captured, this comes at the cost of distortion and decreased resolution, particularly around the edges. Therefore, a wider angular field of view isn't necessarily better.

3) Resolution

Resolution determines image clarity. At a minimum, 1080P Full HD is recommended to ensure that details, such as license plates, are captured clearly. High resolution is also useful for better clarity of zoom-in images.

4) Frame rate

Frame rate, commonly referred to as frames per second (FPS), indicates the number of frames or images taken per second to make up a video. A rate of 30fps or faster is sufficient for smooth video; 20fps or lower has noticeable flicker or choppiness.

5) Battery

An inbuilt battery in a dashcam allows time to save a video file when the car engine turns off. It allows presets to be retained, such that power failure does not result in a return to default settings, such as time and date.

6) APP & Wi-Fi

As dashcams are made in a discreet form factor without a display screen, built-in Wi-Fi brings greater convenience when working with the exclusive app on mobile devices. You can set up your dashcam directly via your mobile device, and share snapshots and videos instantly.

7) GPS

GPS can precisely locate your position anywhere in the world. Dashcams with a GPS receiver can log coordinates, date, and time into recorded video footage, useful when you call for help but are unsure of your location.

8) Memory card included

A good memory card is key to storing critical evidence. Some dash cam units come with a memory card while for others you’ll have to buy it separately. Dashcams are write-intensive, so a high-endurance memory card preferably made of MLC-based NAND flash is recommended for greater stability and reliability.

Using the advice above, you should be able to shop for a dashcam on your own and find one that’s more than satisfactory. But if you’re feeling lost, here is Transcend’s recommended dashcams for any needs.

Do you want to record both inside and outside your car? If you want to record what is happening behind or inside your vehicle as well as record the road in front of you, Transcend’s DrivePro 520 dual-lens dashcam will be the best option for you. It includes two video lens and records from both of these lenses at the same time.

And if you want to have an advanced dashcam with comprehensive protection, Transcend’s DrivePro 230 is right for you. It balances essential features with a multitude of topnotch add-ons, such as SONY Image Sensor, Lane Departure Warning System, Forward Collision Warning System, Parking Mode, GPS Conditions, and Emergency Recording.

The middle of the range – the DrivePro 200 – is probably the best combination of price and value. It comes with an extra wide 160° viewing angle, resolution of 1920x1080p (30fps), and a row of 7 glass lenses to ensure your trip is recorded in high clarity.

If you do plan to drive at night, then be sure to invest in a dash cam with good night vision. Transcend's DrivePro 130/110 dashcam utilizes a Sony image sensor to provide high-resolution images with extremely fine tonal gradation even in low light.

The DrivePro 50 is Transcend’s most compact model with those essential features you need in a dash camera. It has no LCD screen to distract you while you're driving and the free DrivePro App allows you to stream, play back, and download videos, or adjust settings directly from your iOS or Android device with wireless connectivity.

Known for its high-quality flash memory cards, Transcend bundles every DrivePro dashcam with a High Endurance memory card built with top-tier MLC NAND flash chips, providing consistent long-life durability and endurance. You do not need to spend extra money and effort in seeking a compatible and reliable flash card to make your dashcam work. What’s more, the full range of DrivePro dashcams is backed by Transcend’s 2-year Limited Warranty, whereas most dash cams are covered for 1 year only. This reflects Transcend’s confidence in the high quality of production and product performance.

Transcend Information Inc. is proud to announce the introduction of the DrivePro 230 dashcam. Equipped with a Sony Exmor™ sensor, the dashcam captures high-resolution images with extremely fine tonal gradation even in low light. Among the device’s other features are a GPS receiver, a G-sensor, a high-capacity Li-polymer battery, a convenient snapshot button, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

A Sony Exmor™ sensor for high resolution imagery

Transcend’s DrivePro 230 features a Sony Exmor™ sensor that captures high-resolution images with superb, rich color even in low light. Built-in Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology balances the brightest and dimmest areas of captured images, ensuring that every critical shot is as clear as possible. Night or day, the camera can clearly record details such as license plate numbers at 30 fps at 1080p Full HD.

Parking monitoring mode for extra protection

In addition to on-the-road safety, Transcend’s DrivePro 230 stands sentry when the vehicle is parked at a public parking lot or on a roadside. When parked, the driver can enable the motion detection function or the time-lapse video recording function. The former activates recording when motion is detected; the latter enables users to get right to the heart of the matter without needing to view hours of incident-free footage.

Pinpoint the vehicle’s location

The DrivePro 230's GPS receiver can log GPS coordinates, date, and time into recorded video footage. GPS coordinates precisely locate where an incident happened so that emergency road services, police, or an insurance representative can respond more quickly. The DrivePro Toolbox enables the full review of a trip, including GPS position, speed, and time of day.

Additional key features

Transcend’s DrivePro 230 also comes equipped with a Lane Departure Warning System, which checks for, and alerts a driver to, sudden changes in speed and lane. The Forward Collision Warning System warns a driver when the driving speed exceeds a preset value, such that the vehicle is getting too close to the car ahead. The system will in either case alert a driver with a warning sound and an onscreen alert. When the DrivePro detects poor lighting conditions, the Headlight Reminder will be activated. To help prevent tired drivers from getting into an accident, the Driver Fatigue Alert regularly reminds a driver of the need to rest after driving for a preset, driver-determined period of time.

Exclusive DrivePro Toolbox and DrivePro App

The user-friendly DrivePro Toolbox features a sorting function to quickly locate video clips by filename, recording date, or group. The DrivePro Toolbox also provides a screenshot function allowing for the capture of a single frame that can be tailored so that users can rapidly find the shot they are seeking. The DrivePro 230 also comes equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity that works with both Apple iOS and Android devices through the free DrivePro 230 app. While the driver is busy with the work of piloting a car, passengers can view and download videos and images captured via the DrivePro App, and also change settings to make for a safer drive.

The DrivePro 230 dashcam is backed by Transcend’s Two-year Limited Warranty.

KINGMAX Launches “Alcohol Check, the World’s Smallest Smart Breathalyzer”

"Don’t drink and drive” is a well-known slogan to prevent driving under the influence. Everybody can recite the slogan even in their sleep, but when having a meal with family, colleagues or customers it’s not easy to refuse drinks as no-one wants to be the party pooper. Also, winter dishes like chicken or duck stewed in rice wine and a shot of liquor to warm up the body may sneakily notch up your alcohol percentage in your blood to the point where driving becomes dangerous for yourself and others.

To help people check their alcohol percentage before driving, KINGMAX has developed the Alcohol Check, a smart alcohol concentration detector. The size of a memory stick, this breathalyzer features a MEMS gas sensor and powerful firmware. Insert the breathalyzer into your phone to connect it to the Alcohol Check app. Breathe into the breathalyzer and you will see an instant display of your alcohol percentage, and you can decide whether you should drive or not. If the answer is no, an in-app button enables you to call a driver service or taxi to take you safely home.

The KINGMAX Alcohol Check Smart Breathalyzer is the world’s smallest alcohol detection device, measuring only 32 mm in length, 11.5 mm in width. It supports Android 6.0 and is downward compatible with 5.0 / 4.0. No charging required. Plug-and-probe. Fits in any wallet and can be attached to a key ring. When you’re about ready to go home after your meal, simply take out your Alcohol Check, breathe into it for 10 seconds, and your blood’s alcohol concentration will be displayed immediately. An easy way to self-test the alcohol percentage in your blood anytime, anywhere, and avoid drinking too much! Not sure if you’ve had one too many to drive safely? Use Alcohol Check to check it!

Yanson Group of Bus Companies Integrates Transcend DrivePro 100 Dashcams to Improve the Safety of Bus Passengers and Drivers

Yanson Group of Bus Companies is the largest land transport company in the Philippines. It compromises Ceres Liner, established in 1968 and later as Ceres Transport Inc. in 2009. It also includes Rural Transit of Mindanao Inc (RTMI), established in 1985, and Bachelor Express Inc., also established in 1985.

This is a family owned and managed business, which has grown from a lone 12-seater jeepney—the most common form of transportation of Philippines—plied through a single route, and now has become a conglomerate of transportation companies with a combined number of operating units of a little over 2000 transport vehicles as of January 2008.

They have operations in nearly 80% of the bus routes in the Visayas and Mindanao regions and some parts of Luzon in the Philippines.

As of today, the corporation presides over a transportation business with 7,500 direct and active employees, and 2,000 buses serving the island of Negros, Panay, Cebu, Samar-Leyte, Mindanao, and Batangas City.

The challenges the Yanson Group of Bus Companies is monitoring all their vehicles, which travels on a daily basis, passing through steep roads and highways filled with fast-moving vehicles. Without being able to monitor the buses and their driver, it would difficult and challenging for the Yanson Group to get feedback on how to maintain the quality of their services.

In September 2016, the Yanson Group of Bus Companies has integrated dashboard cameras into their buses, selecting Transcend as their partner.

Transcend has provided the Yanson Group DrivePro 100 devices. These devices are capable of recording high-quality videos even without connecting the devices into the vehicles.

The integration of Transcend DrivePro 100 into the buses has solved a number of incidents, such as arguments between passengers and conductors, and also monitors passengers’ should there be a robbery incident. This also allows the managers to remotely supervise passengers to ensure a safe journey.

The DrivePro 100 has also given the managers of the Yanson Group of Bus Companies to personally monitor the activities of their drivers and conductors, if they are treating the passengers well, or determine if the driver was being reckless on the road, which can lead to accidents and cause heavy traffic congestions.

The Transcend DrivePro 100 features high-quality lens that automatically adjusts to different lightning conditions. This means whether day or night the DrivePro 100 will ensure that it records with full clarity.

Recorded videos can be selected between 720p or 1080p resolutions at 30 frames per second with a 130-degree wide-angled lens. It also has infrared filter lens that prevents fogging over long periods of recording.

Even if the Transcend DrivePro 100 is switched off, it features a G-Sensor, which detects impacts and collisions, automatically switching on the dashboard camera. This also protects the bus while parked, on instances when people try to break-in to the bus.

The built-in Li-Polymer battery makes certain that even if the bus has its engines off, the DrivePro 100 will continue to record videos. It will also record an additional 30 seconds after the battery has died.

The DrivePro 100 comes with the DrivePro PC Tool for Windows. This is software that features a user-friendly interface to sort out files by date and group, allowing all video formats to be played without installing additional codecs. A screenshot function is included. This tool becomes especially handy while reporting incidents to insurance companies or claims settlements for police.

The Transcend DrivePro 100 has helped improve business for the Yanson Group of Bus Companies by helping its administrators monitor its employees and passengers to ensure quality customer service.
